Buenos Aires Favorites

We asked some of our friends to give us an insiders look at what made their trip to Argentina memorable and what advice they would like to pass on to future visitors. Here are some excerpts from our favorite responses:

“…what comes to mind first has to be the tango. Both the street tango you’d hear in San Telmo on the weekends and the shows (cabaret and lesson styles were both pretty cool.) I think the coffee shop vibe is really cool, very Greenwich Village without the snottiness. The Architecture was also amazing, especially that of the embassy’s which all had their own grandeur to them…the meals are some of the best I’ve every had (i.e. the Lomo Dada steak with scalloped potatoes and red wine at DaDa.)”

“Falling in love with Tango I decided to move to Buenos Aires. Once I was there it didn’t take long to fall in love with the city too. The cobblestone streets, the festivities till dawn, the diverse neighborhoods, ferias, asados and the art all made Buenos Aires a wonderful place to call home.”

“Best restaurants would have to be…La Dorita. Great, classic Argentine parilla.  Always full of locals, the entrana and vacio cuts are Argentine and great… La Cabrera – even better Argentine parilla, not as classic and full of tourists.  fabulous cuts of beef, huge meat portions, and each comes with a bunch of small plates.  so don’t fill up on appetizers, although you must get the proveleta which is an awesome baked cheese dish. Sotto Voce – semi-expensive but amazing Italian food.  Awesome service…wear your dress/nice shirts for this one…it’s a lot of fun. Sarkis – absolutely fabulous Armenian place.  my favorite restaurant in BaAs.  went almost once a week…was completely addicted.  I’d put it up against any Mediterranean restaurant in the world.  Cool bar:  Ocho7Ocho. Located at 878 Thames in Villa Crespo. There is no sign, but you’ll know you’re there if there is a bouncer-ish guy standing out front.  It’s very cool, really good drinks, excellent music, nice lighting, great caipirinhas. Also, a must see is the Orchestra Tipica Fernandez Fierro on wednesday nights.  Incredible modern, young tango music show, really cool venue too. Only 15 pesos to get it, call early to reserve a table, but its not necessary.

“We were obsessed with empanadas at La Peca in Palermo. I went running at the big park by the MALBA museum, which was nice because I got to see all of these beautiful monuments. I love all the areas at night where people can eat outdoors and the streets are blocked off so no one can drive through.”

“My favorite memories of Buenos Aires? Home Hotel where we stayed, Intimate music clubs such as Thelonious, the dramatic and light-filled MALBA, hours of walking and looking at architecture– gorgeous old buildings side by side with fantastic modern ones. Graffiti stencils on exterior everywhere. The best and most varied restaurants: Bizkaia for squid and black ink rice, Cafe San Juan for Spanish tapas, Prana Cocina Vegetariana in Palermo for vegetarian lunch. And, of course, we loved the tango!”
